Project Description
This is an introductory course aimed at understanding the evolution of the field of Psychology. Students will venture briefly to ancient Greece for early philosophical ideas then are introduced to highly influential (and sometimes eccentric) people who paved the way for modern day researchers and clinicians. The aim of this class is not merely to learn dates, but to understand how an entire field can be affected by the zeitgeist and for students to see the progression of this field. Emphasis will be placed on the main psychological theories and perspectives and how they influenced modern Psychology. Please note that history is seldom pretty. It is often filled with injustices and atrocities, but as George Santayana once wrote, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” (taken from Reason in Common Sense, 1905). It is necessary to discuss all important contributions to the field, including ideas that were racist, sexist, or in any other way offensive. These ideas will be introduced in the most respectful manner and are in no way reflective of the views or values shared by the University or instructor.
